Why a Hallmark is important when buying jewellery

Why is a Hallmark important?

A hallmark is an independent guarantee that the jewellery you buy has been verified to contain the correct amount of precious metal. This is a legal requirement in the UK for jewellery made from precious metals.

Hallmark on Considered Jewellery bracelet

The Considered Signature range is crafted from solid, Sterling silver. This means it contains 92.5% pure silver and is why sterling silver is often stamped with the number 925.

We test all the silver we use in one of the UK's independent Assay Offices to ensure the sterling silver content is correct.

What is the Hallmark?

Every item of Considered Jewellery is hallmarked in accordance with the UK Hall Marking Act 1973. The mark is a set of three icons put on to the jewellery with a laser or stamp. This includes the:

  1. Standard metal purity mark. The Considered Signature collection is marked with a fineness mark of 925

  2. Considered Jewellery Sponsors Mark - CJL

  3. Birmingham Assay Office mark

On smaller pieces of jewellery, the marks can be so tiny they are not easily visible to the naked eye. You may need a magnifying glass or special tool called a 'jewellers loupe' to see them.

The Created in the UK Mark

As well as the legal Hallmark, the Considered Signature collection is marked with the ‘Created in the UK’ stamp. Find out more about it in our Journal.

The Fairmined Mark

The Fairmined Mark is applied to our gold vermeil jewellery, to provide you with a guarantee that the gold used to plate the pieces has come from artisanal mines certified against the Fairmined Standards. Have a look at our Journal to find out more about Fairmined; and how the scheme supports miners to earn a fair price for their work and better look after the environment.

We’re dedicated to creating a radically transparent jewellery brand, and helping you to buy with confidence. Feel free to drop us a line with any questions, we’d love to hear from you.
