You’ve just received a delivery. A mysterious box that, when opened, reveals a swathe of tissue and glimmer of gold. Unwrapping your jewellery purchase or receiving it as a gift from someone should be a magical experience. That’s why, as well as considering every aspect of our gold and silver jewellery to ensure the way we work protects the environment and is respectful of the people around us, we also take great pride in our packaging. Afterall, mindfully crafted jewellery belongs in eco-friendly packaging made to the same high standards.
WHY IT WAS IMPORTANT to create eco-friendly PACKAGING
Our packaging design decisions were governed by the well-known mantra: reduce reuse, recycle. According to No Issue, packaging represents over 30 billion tons of non-renewable waste each year. We wanted to ensure that Considered contributes as little as possible to this figure.
We started our packaging journey with a search for the perfect box to put our jewellery in. It was a search that took over a year, and at the end we still hadn’t found anything that was the right fit for our brand.
Suppliers showed us boxes made from leather, plastic, wood, and card, but few knew where the materials came from. Some claimed that the boxes could be recycled at the end of their lifespan, but when we did a bit of digging this wasn’t true.
Traditional jewellery boxes are often made from materials that could be recycled as individual components but when made into a jewellery box they are no longer recyclable. They often have a laminated outer layer or a foam inner, which is made from plastic.
Then one day, we had a light bulb moment. What if we shunned the traditional jewellery box entirely and came up with a new way of packaging our jewellery. A whole world of more environmentally friendly options opened to us.
creating considered packaging
Our pieces arrive with you wrapped in acid-free tissue made from a mix of recycled and new FSC certified materials and printed with soy based inks. They are carefully tucked inside a hand-made, GOTS organic cotton jewellery pouch. The fabric is made in India and we have it printed with our signature logo design in the UK using ECOCERT certified inks. This means they have been independently certified to ensure they have been made in an environmentally friendly manner.
The pouches are stitched by a lovely lady called Terri, a talented seamstress based near our studio in Yorkshire. The zips and ties used on the pouches are made from nylon and polyester microfibre. These are not our ideal choice and we’re going to work to improve them on our next batch.
We hope you’ll reuse the jewellery pouch for many years, either to protect your jewellery or to store other precious items. They can be used as a jewellery roll, so perfect for keeping things safe when travelling and for storing items in your jewellery drawer.
Instead of a box each pouch is placed in a gift envelope, which tells you about how the jewellery is made. We love these envelopes as they are made from upcycled cotton waste mixed with coffee grounds. The materials give a beautiful colour and texture, whilst also being a great example of creating something beautiful out of something that has been discarded. Check out the Little Green Paper Shop in Cheshire for lots of gorgeous alternatives to normal paper.
Our mailer boxes, which come from Westpack, are made from FSC certified materials and, along with our packing tape, can be recycled or composted. Even our stickers and tissue paper can be put in your compost bin and will break down naturally within around 180 days.
We are proud that by thinking outside the box (if you’ll excuse the pun) we’ve created something unique that reflects our brands ethos. We’ll continue to evolve our packaging as we grow and would love to hear from you with any thoughts on how we can improve.
We’re dedicated to creating a radically transparent jewellery brand, which you can buy with confidence. Feel free to drop us a line with any questions, we’d love to hear from you.
